Streaming Movies performed really well at the Oscar

Now that the pandemic has finally eased, we’re seeing the return of big public events. Yesterday, we had one of the biggest theater celebrations – The Oscar. Yesterday’s event was quite remarkable for enthusiasts of the streaming industry. After all, we saw a great performance of streaming movies at the Oscar. In the past few years, The Academy has been ignoring or looking down on streaming movies, but this year, we saw Oscar’s organization basically saying that there is no way to avoid this segment anymore. The fact is, that streaming movies have become even more powerful in recent years, as theaters have been closed and streaming has been the only way for many releases.

Streaming services got important awards at the Oscar

Apple TV+’ CODA won the Oscar for Best Motion Picture. The film had a short theatrical run, but its true home is Apple TV+. Worth noting, that Sian Heder was also awarded the Best Adapted Screenplay award. He was the Writer / Director of CODA. Furthermore, Troy Kotsur got the Best Supporting Actor award. He was the first deaf male actor to win an Oscar. Worth noting that the actor has a remarkable talent which already brought him the BAFTA award.

This may be a hit on Netflix, after all, the big “N” has been trying to get a prize for years now. The giant of streaming came close in 2019 with Roma, and this year, The Power of the Dog was among the favorites to win. In fact, it received many nominations for the event, and Jane Campion did win Best Director. This is an important moment, after all, she was the third woman in the entire event’s story to win the prize. However, for Netflix, the results probably could be better. Despite the record 27 nominations, the company only got this prize. And this result probably wasn’t enough for the executives to have a good Monday.

Apple TV+

Netflix’s trending Don’t Look Up also has been running for Best Picture. However, it didn’t win the prize. The story is different for HBO Max. After all, the successful Dune which was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max won six awards – Cinematography, Film Editing, Visual Effects, Music, Sound, and Production Design. King Richard, the starring Will Smith, was also released on Max the same day as in theaters. It gave Will Smith it’s very first Oscar.

Dsiney+ won several Oscars at the event, with Encanto receiving the best Animated Filme, and Cruella grabbing the Costume Design. Even Amazon which recently acquired MGM has won a prize yesterday.

We expect streaming services to become a relevant part of the company in recent months.
