Pathfinder is one of the two recon legends that launched with Apex Legends. Unlike Bloodhound, whose kit is designed around gathering information, Pathfinder is mobility-oriented and can help teams get into favorable positions for team fights. If you’re new to Pathfinder, here’s a breakdown of his kit to help you understand the legend better.
Pathfinder is the epitome of optimism, despite his circumstances. An MRVN (Mobile Robotic Versatile Entity) modified to specialize in location scouting and surveying, he booted up decades ago in an abandoned warehouse with no idea who created him or why. With only his MRVN designation to hint at his identity, Pathfinder eventually set off in search of his creator.
He’s joined the Apex Games to gain a following and hopefully draw the attention of his maker. In the meantime, he remains enthusiastic and helpful, always ready to make new friends in the arena. Respawn Entertainment has expanded on his story over the years, and we know that he is connected to Ash and even worked multiple jobs before joining the Games.
Apex Legends – Pathfinder Abilities
As a Recon legend, Pathfinder shares the same perks as Seer, Valkyrie, Bloodhound, and Crypto. The recon passive allows you to access the 12 survey beacons available on the map in any given match to determine the next circle location.
Passive – Insider Knowledge
One of the ways Pathfinder sets himself apart from other recon legends is through his passive ability. When you use a survey beacon to scan the subsequent ring, his ultimate ability’s cooldown reduces by 10 seconds permanently. If you scan the beacons four times leading up to the 5th zone, his ultimate cooldown drops by 40 seconds permanently.
Scanning beacons also recharges Pathfinder’s ultimate to full. It’s recommended to set up a zip line if you have his ultimate active before scanning a beacon. This means two back-to-back zip lines for your team to use.
Passive – Grappling Hook
Pathfinder’s Grappling Hook allows players to get to out-of-reach places quickly. The ability’s cooldown varies from 10 to 30 seconds depending on the grapple’s length.
The Grappling Hook attaches to the first solid object it hits, including players and zip lines, and pulls you towards it. The maximum length of the grappling hook is 21 meters. There is a circle on Pathfinder’s cross hair that turns blue, indicating when the surface you’re pointing at is within grapple range.
Pathfinder’s Grappling Hook is what makes him such a fun character to play and fully mastering it can take months. We recommend watching some top-tier Pathfinder gameplay by pro players or content creators to learn new spots and movement techniques to integrate into your games.
Ultimate – Zipline Gun
The Zipline Gun creates a zip line that anyone can use. The ultimate has a 20-second cooldown, which you can reduce drastically by scanning survey beacons throughout the game.
The ability creates a zip line between your current location and a target location, which you, your teammates, and enemies can use to move quickly between both points. The other end of the zip line can be attached to any surface, including to places where players can’t stand. The maximum length of the zip line is 100 meters and up to 4 zip lines can be active on the map at once.
Here are some tips that will help you improve your Pathfinder gameplay:
Master Grapple Movement
Spend time mastering the full extent of your Grappling Hook skills. The ability is one of the simplest in the game, yet can create endless possibilities when it comes to helping you set up plays or get out of danger.
We strongly recommend watching players like Skurul, one of the few remaining Pathfinder purists out there. It’s difficult to find recent Pathfinder gameplay from pro players and creators as the legend has fallen out of the meta but still remains one of the most enjoyable Legends to play.
Understand Pathfinder’s Weaknesses
Pathfinder can be very aggressive and help you secure kills or outplay enemies in style, but he can also be dead weight in terms of his abilities in endgame fights.
Neither his grapple nor zip lines are useful in many final zone fights while other recon legends like Crypto, Bloodhound, and Seer can set up game-winning plays. This doesn’t mean that Pathfinder is bad, but that his abilities aren’t always valuable in every end-game scenario.
Master Zipline Jumping
Knowing how to move around on and bounce off zip lines prevents you from moving in a straight line and getting shot by the enemies, which can make a world of difference.
Grapple Players to Stop Escapes
Grappling players can be very difficult but if you notice a player trying to escape with low health, you can attach a grapple hook to them. Even if you miss, you’re likely to grapple onto an object and get pulled towards them for a quick finish.
